Ringside Report Radio Podcast
Ringside Report, presently available twice weekly, focuses primarily on Mixed Martial Arts with a strong emphasis on the top promoter the UFC. MMA is a sport that has been growing at a phenomenal pace for the past several years. It's reach is growing with more and more regional promotions starting up all over the US. Ringside Report has made an effort to keep on top the goings on in the different promotions. Wrestling Uncensored is a conversation about Pro Wrestling between Dave Simon and Professional Wrestler, Johnny North available once per week. They discuss and debate the latest story lines in the WWE and other companies and are not afraid to provide their own brand of honest criticism from the perspective of a true fan. Both guys have been watching Pro Wrestling since they were kids and bring that child-like emotion into their back and forth that has people "tweeting" about the shows for days after they are broadcast. Host Dave Simon's enthusiasm for Combat Sports is engaging his audiences. We're finding fans of one sport listening to the other show just because of the way Dave entertains. Listeners to both shows are mostly in a male 18-49 year old demographic. We have people either listening live to the Internet stream or downloading the podcast from across Canada and the USA as well as Europe and Asia.

Kimo Leopoldo Interview (he's not dead)

Not long after reports contradicting news of Kimo Leopoldo's death surfaced, he took the time to tell the listeners of Ringside Report Radio that he was indeed still alive. Download this podcast where he along with his manager sets the record straight with Dave Simon and Kevin McKough on the Team990.

Reported death

Various media outlets reported that Leopoldo had died from complications from a heart attack at age 41.[7] Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports reported on his Twitter that Leopoldo's publicist refuted reports that Leopoldo was in Costa Rica and instead was seen alive in Orange County the night before.[8] From his Twitter he later also claimed "Also, from Kimo's publicist, apparently he was sleeping and woke up to learn of reports of his death." and "From what I've been told, and this is not finalized, Kimo will hold a conference call tomorrow."

At a July 21, 2009 press conference Leopoldo denied anyone close to him created the rumor, he also expressed his desire to return to fight one last time.[9]

Kimo Leopoldo (January 4, 1968) is a retired German mixed martial artist, often billed as simply Kimo. He made his MMA debut at UFC 3 in 1994 losing to Royce Gracie by submission. Kimo's fighting style has been described as freestyle, with a mixture of striking and grappling techniques.[citation needed] He was erroneously credited with a black belt in Taekwondo in his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut at UFC 3 (it is unclear whether Kimo or fight promoters originated this claim).[1] Kimo is well known for his Christian beliefs: he sports many religious tattoos, and entered the arena at UFC 3 carrying a large cross on his back.[2]

Interview with TJ Grant

DONG HYUN KIM TO FACE TJ GRANT ON JULY 11TH

Las Vegas NV (USA) -- A dislocated shoulder, suffered in training, has forced welterweight standout Jonathan Goulet to withdraw from his bout against Dong Hyun Kim on the preliminary card of UFC® 100 on July 11th. But Canada will still be represented in the bout, as Nova Scotia’s TJ Grant will step in to face Kim at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Grant made quite an impression in his UFC debut in April, as he pounded out an impressive three round split decision win over seasoned competitor Ryo Chonan. Now 14-2 as a pro, the 25-year old Grant is eager to move further up the welterweight ranks by scoring a victory over the talented Kim.

Dong Hyun Kim is a hero back home in his native South Korea, and the unbeaten (11-0-1, 1 NC) “Stun Gun” is rapidly building a United States fanbase as well after wins over Jason Tan and Matt Brown. A fourth degree black belt in judo, Kim hopes to keep the “0” at the end of his record on July 11th.

St-Pierre talks candidly about the possibility of fighting Anderson Silva in Toronto or Olympic Stadium in Montreal. Georges, Dave and Kevin

"Being part of UFC 100 – it’s a great honor for me because I know it’s going to be a historical show. Even though the focus is not strictly on my fight like it was last time when I fought BJ Penn, it makes this fight even more dangerous. Thiago Alves is the greatest challenge that I had in my career – he’s gonna be the toughest guy that I fought so far, and that’s what makes him very dangerous is he’s a very confident guy, he’s a gentleman, and he doesn’t have to talk trash. So even though he doesn’t talk trash, I know he’s going to come out very strong and try to hurt me really bad early in the fight. However, I will be very well prepared. I try to focus on what I’m going to do to him instead of focusing too much on what he’s going to do to me."

Interview with Mike Quick Swick At UFC 63 Swick beat former title challenger David Loiseau via unanimous decision, where he suffered a hand injury found out to be ligament damage. Swick's first UFC defeat came at UFC 69, losing by unanimous decision to Japanese middleweight Yushin Okami. He had Okami noticeably rattled toward the end of the second round with a flurry of punches, but ultimately succumbed to Okami's superior wrestling and physical presence, as he was took down comfortably and suffered an onslaught of ground and pound for the majority of the fight.

Chris Leben was asked to fight Mike Swick for the second time on UFC Fight Night 11 (the two had previously met in the WEC, where Leben handed Swick his only KO loss to date) for the main event, on any weight class of his choosing but Leben turned down the fight. Swick then was scheduled to fight Jonathan Goulet but withdrew from the fight on September 2nd due to a rib injury. Swick headlined UFC Fight Night 12 making his welterweight debut, where he defeated Josh Burkman via majority decision.[1]

Swick defeated Marcus Davis at UFC 85 on June 7th, 2008 where he controlled the fight displaying disciplined striking skills en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Swick then went on to fight and defeat Jonathan Goulet at the UFC: Fight for the Troops (Ultimate Fight Night 16) by KO in 33 seconds into the first round on December 10th, 2008. He opened up with a characteristically aggressive flurry of punches, where Goulet was caught and knocked out before he hit the ground, Swick followed up with strikes on the floor untill the referee swiftly stopped the fight.

Swick will next take on TUF 6 alum Ben Saunders (fighter) at UFC 99.

Interview with Urijah Faber Before his rematch against Mike Brown Urijash Faber took time to speak to Dave and Kevin.
Faber vs Brown

Fighter Biography

Thoughts on opponent, Mike Brown? I’m really excited to get this title shot. I had the belt for a long time and I’m eager to get some redemption. I think the biggest thing is I have to be a little more careful. The last time I got caught for being careless. I sort of live by the sword and die by the sword. He’s one of the best fighters in the world, so I need to be on my game and not his game and not make mistakes.

When and why did you start training for fighting?
I’ve always had a passion for fighting.  I started wrestling in the 8th grade and have never stopped.  I began training in MMA in 2003 after graduating from UC Davis.

What ranks and titles have you held?
Former WEC Featherweight Champion

Do you have any heroes?
My parents

What is your favorite technique? I
like to try to invent new techniques.  My favorite moves come from the moment.

What does it mean for you to fight in the WEC?
I feel like I finally found a home.  Up to this point, no large organizations have been willing to showcase the lighter weight classes.  This is unfortunate as some of the most exciting fighters in the world are in the lighter weight classes.  The WEC presents a major opportunity not only for myself, but all 145 and 135 pounders to showcase their talent. I truly believe the WEC will be the premier organization in the near future.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn?
I have a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Davis.

What was your job before you started fighting?
I was a student at UC Davis and began fighting professionally shortly after graduation.  I also coached wrestling at UC Davis while beginning my MMA career.

Most memorable professional fight? My 3rd fight agains David Velasquez.  It was the first one to go the distance and it was the first time I won a belt.

What was your most challenging professional fight? Against Tyson Griffin. First loss.  I faced some adversity when I split my head open on the cage and fought through it and I lost in the 3rd round but it was a good fight.

Did you compete in any other sport(s) at college or professional level?
I wrestled in HS all 4 years then I went to UC Davis where I excelled for another 4 years.

Did you put more emphasis towards a fighting style or adjust your training to prepare for your opponent?
Just my training. I always train hard and try to stay in great shape.

What, other than WINNING, are you using for motivation for the fight?
I have my home crowd there and I’m looking for some revenge. I also hate to lose.

What is your favorite thing about this sport?
Just how primal it really is.

How long do you see yourself staying in this sport
? I would say probably another 8 years.  I lead a healthy lifestyle and I take care of my body, so expect to see me for a long while.

Interview with Joe Riggs Joe Riggs talks to the Ringside Report a week before his big Strikeforce bout with Phil Baroni.

Over his career, Riggs has fought in the Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight and Welterweight divisions, and became a four-time Desert Quest champion, two-time Grappler's Quest Advance champion, Rage in the Cage Heavyweight and Middleweight champion, Art of War Heavyweight champion, Evolution Combat Heavyweight champion, and XCF Light Heavyweight champion. [2]

Riggs' dream of fighting in the UFC materialized in 2004, in a winning bout against Canadian fighter Joe Doerksen. Riggs received his shot at the UFC Welterweight title at UFC 56 in November 2005 against Matt Hughes.

Originally, the title shot was offered to Karo Parisyan, who had to withdraw due to a torn hamstring. When Riggs was contacted to take Parisyan's place he jumped at the chance, despite having fought at UFC 55 just a month earlier. However, Riggs did not make the required weight and the fight was declared a non-title event, due to Hughes allowing Riggs to fight him (if a fighter does not make weight for a match, the match may still take place if their opponent allows it). Despite his efforts, Riggs could not mount a significant challenge; Hughes took him down and submitted him with a kimura from half-guard just minutes into the first round of the fight.

Following his loss to Hughes, Riggs rebounded to win against Nick Diaz (decision) at UFC 57. In the hospital room after the fight, Diaz and Riggs got into a physical altercation where they had to be separated by police.

Riggs then moved up to Middleweight to face The Ultimate Fighter alumni Mike Swick. Early in the fight Riggs was caught in a guillotine choke and tapped out. Riggs then fought The Ultimate Fighter 2's Jason Von Flue, submitting him with a triangle choke.

Riggs' last UFC bout was on December 13, 2006 against Welterweight contender Diego Sanchez at UFC Fight Night 7. Riggs lost the fight due to knockout from a hook followed by a knee in 1:45 of the first round.

Following the fight with Sanchez, Riggs chose to go to the WEC and compete for the vacant Middleweight championship, but had to pull out of the fight the day before because of a recurring back injury.[3]

Riggs lost to Cory Devela via TKO at Strikeforce: At The Dome due to re-injuring his back while pummeling before Devela threw him. He was a heavy favorite in this fight, and his loss continued a streak of performances that did not live up to the expectations for the talented fighter (particularly vs. Hughes, Salaverry, Swick, and Sanchez).

Riggs was to return to action on Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Thomson, facing Jiujitsu specialist Luke Stewart. Riggs stepped in as a late replacement for Shonie Carter who was injured in training. The fight was to be contested at a catchweight of 178 pounds.[1] However, He was denied licensure by the California State Athletic Commission after disclosing his recent use of prescription medication during the licensing process. Joe Riggs lost to Kazuo Misaki at Strikeforce at the Playboy Mansion on September 20, 2008. Joe Riggs won his last fight at Strikeforce: Destruction on November 21, 2008 against Luke Stewart by TKO (Punches) in 2nd round 2:05. Riggs broke his hand throwing the first punch of the bout, but managed to rally in the second round, breaking Stewart's nose in the process. [2]

He will next be fighting on the Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields card from the ScottTrade Center in St. Louis,MO on June 6, 2009. His opponent will be Phil Baroni in a 3 round welterweight bout. This card will be broadcast live on the Showtime cable network.

Interview with Scott Hanfs of Steel Smith

Scott talks with Dave and Kevin prior to his June 6th bout at Strikeforce Lawlor vs Shields.

In the early half of his career, Smith – fighting at heavyweight – compiled victories in the International Fighting Championships and Gladiator Challenge shows across the United States. While successful in the smaller promotions, Smith's first major appearance in the mixed martial arts world came in the World Extreme Cagefighting organization. Smith entered a WEC light heavyweight tournament with limited name recognition, but was branded by experts as the dark horse of the competition. [1]

Smith defeated WEC veteran Tim McKenzie in the semi-finals. With that victory, Smith was slated to fight Justin Levens in the tournament finals; Levens, however, was halted on doctor's advice due to a shoulder injury he sustained in his semi-final bout. The tournament alternate, Tait Fletcher, was brought into the championship round instead. Smith made short work of Fletcher, scoring a first-round technical knockout to become the WEC Light Heavyweight Champion.

Smith would defend his championship from Justin Levens at WEC 18 before scheduling a fight with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in April 2006, moving down a weight class to fight David Terrell at UFC 59. The fight – marked with questionable officiating – ended in controversial fashion, prompting Smith to file a complaint with the California State Athletic Commission. [2]

Smith was then seen as a middleweight contestant on The Ultimate Fighter: The Comeback, where he quickly lost his quarterfinal matchup against Travis Lutter. Smith appeared on the season finale, knocking out Pete Sell in the second round of a very exciting fight in a sequence that saw Smith sustain a hard punch to the liver, and throw the bout-winning knockout punch before falling to the ground in pain.

Smith lost his next fight in the UFC by decision against Patrick Cote at UFC 67. [3] More recently, Smith defeated Troy Miller by technical knockout at Palace Fighting Championship 2 in Lemoore, California. He lost against Ed Herman at UFC 72. Herman submitted Smith with a rear naked choke at 2:25 in the second round after Herman landed a nasty elbow on Smith in the first round covering his face in blood.

Smith made his EliteXC debut on February 16th knocking out Kyle Noke seven seconds into round two. The victory earned him a title shot against Robbie Lawler. The bout was declared a no contest after an accidental poke in the eye in the third round. The first two rounds were so exciting that Gary Shaw awarded both fighters their win bonuses and announced an immediate rematch. Smith lost the subsequent rematch to Lawler via TKO on July 26, 2008 at EliteXC: Unfinished Business. At Strikeforce: Destruction, Smith took a fight with Terry Martin at one week notice and beat Martin in the 1st round by KO.

Interview with Phil "New York Bad Ass" Baroni Phil Baroni talks to the Ringside Report a week before his big Strikeforce bout with Joe Riggs.

One of the most controversial and outspoken fighters in the sport, Baroni made his MMA debut on July 5, 2000 and TKO’d John Hayes just 0:45 into the first round at “Vengeance at the Vanderbilt” in Plainview, New York. Due to his charismatic personality and devastating punching power, the Long Island native would go on to become one of the hottest properties in MMA. However, after some tough losses in the UFC, Baroni eventually moved to Japan to fight in PRIDE events, where he recorded notable wins over the likes of Yuki Kondo and Ryo Chonnan before returning to the states in 2007 to provide closure to his heated Internet feud with Frank Shamrock.

In what would prove to be one of the top fights of the year (June 22, 2007, SHOWTIME PPV), Baroni suffered a second round TKO loss to Shamrock after Shamrock put him in a rear naked choke. Showing a warrior’s spirit, Baroni refused to tap, instead opting to pass out, forcing the referee to decline Shamrock submission victory.

Soon after the fight, the California State Athletic Commission announced that Baroni had tested positive for two types of steroids, Boldenone and Stanozolol. He was suspended for one year and fined $2,500. Baroni has denied the accusations throughout and mounted an appeal in hopes of having the suspension overturned.

While the suspension was never overturned, it was reduced from 12 months to six. He returned to action on March 15, 2008 in the ICON Sport promotion in Honolulu.

After a strong first round, Baroni showed signs of a fighter who was coming off an extended layoff and ultimately lost the bout at 1:45 of round 5 against Kala Kolohe Hose in a contest to decide the vacant ICON middleweight championship.

Baroni has reeled off three straight wins since moving down from the middleweight to welterweight division.
